SUMMARY:YOUTH UNSTOPPABLE
DESCRIPTION:Dir: Slater Jewell-Kemker | USA | Cert: U  \n  \n  \nSince she was 14 years old\, Slater Jewell-Kemker has been travelling around the world as a Climate Activist\, meeting and interviewing other youths from this enormous network of international trailblazers. 2018 saw the rise to prominence of Youth Climate Activism with Greta Thunberg\, but Jewell-Kemker’s film highlights that Thunberg’s incredible rise to prominence was not done in isolation. Youth Unstoppable is an extraordinary examination of the powers of ordinary people to achieve real change\, and a timely reminder that we are always stronger when we are connected\, and working toward a shared goal.   \nThe infectious idealism of this film is inspiring\, and will urge anyone\, no matter their age\, to make a difference!  \n  \nDiscounts and Concessions available through the box office.\n– Access Membership Companion seats 75% discount at all performances.\n– Groups 10+ £2.00 off.\n– Festival ticket offer – get 25% off full-price tickets if you book any 4 events across the two days.

SUMMARY:GUNDA
DESCRIPTION:Dir: Viktor Kossakovsky | Norway | 93mins | Cert: PG  \n  \nFrom the director of the climate documentary Aquarela\, this aesthetically stunning film follows the lives of the eponymous Sow\, as well as two cows and a chicken\, as they live out their daily lives.  Depicting the emotional lives of his animal subjects\, Kossakovsky’s tender and moving portrait sensitively depicts the cruelty of the farming industry without ever once lapsing into the grotesque. Gunda instead keeps its focus on the relationships between the farm animals\, which are as complex as meaningful as our relationships to one another. Beautifully filmed to give narrative agency to its animal subjects\, this is a film unlike any other.  \nA stunning\, and deeply moving argument against the meat industry which prioritises the animals\, rather than the humans who breed them.  \n  \nDiscounts and Concessions available through the box office.\n– Access Membership Companion seats 75% discount at all performances.\n– Groups 10+ £2.00 off.\n– Festival ticket offer – get 25% off full-price tickets if you book any 4 events across the two days.

SUMMARY:THE BIGGEST LITTLE FARM
DESCRIPTION:Dir: John Chester | USA | 91mins | Cert: PG  \n  \nThe Biggest Little Farm follows the Chesters as they swap the big city for a (not so) little farm. Envisioned as a self-contained eco-system\, Apricot Lane Farms is the Chester family’s attempt to show how easily we could do things differently. Besides a moral attitude to livestock\, and an innovative approach to growing crops and maintaining soil quality\, it is the heart warming quality of The Biggest Little Farm that makes it such a significant documentary. Cows\, Pigs\, Dogs\, and even crops are all treated by the farmers and the filmmakers with the utmost respect. Whilst The Biggest Little Farm never claims farming life as easy\, the palpable joy of reconnecting with Nature and providing a sustainable alternative to industrialised farming is explored through the Chesters – we learn along with them that changing our attitudes to our environment\, changes us for the better\, too.  \nA moving\, heart-warming documentary which leaves everyone who sees it with the desire to get out  into the garden\, and get growing!  \n  \nDiscounts and Concessions available through the box office.\n– Access Membership Companion seats 75% discount at all performances.\n– Groups 10+ £2.00 off.\n– Festival ticket offer – get 25% off full-price tickets if you book any 4 events across the two days. \n

SUMMARY:KOYAANISQATSI
DESCRIPTION:Dir: Godfrey Reggio | USA | 1982 | 86mins | Cert: U  \n  \nTaking its title from a Hopi word meaning ‘life out of balance\,’ Godfrey Reggio’s Koyaanisqatsi – eight years in the making – displays the lack of balance between humans and our relationship with our environment. Reggio’s breath taking ‘tone poem’ marries experimental editing\, lush cinematography by Ron Fricke (who would go on to make Baraka and Samsara)\, and Phillip Glass’ iconic score to create an audio/visual experience unlike any other. Told without interviews or narration\, Reggio’s film shows our lives\, our goals\, our achievements\, and our failures within the context of their effects on the world around us. By prioritising nature over the human understanding of it\, Reggio reveals both the grandeur of the world around us\, as well as the follies of our attitude towards it.   \nA seminal film both in art and environmental circles\, Koyaanisqatsi\, which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2022\, is the perfect film to begin our weekend of eco-films\, challenging not only the way we see film itself\, but the world around us too.   \nPlease note that this film screening begins at 10.30am \nDiscounts and Concessions available through the box office.\n– Access Membership Companion seats 75% discount at all performances.\n– Groups 10+ £2.00 off.\n– Festival ticket offer – get 25% off full-price tickets if you book any 4 events across the two days.

SUMMARY:Derek
DESCRIPTION:Dir: Isaac Julien | UK 2008 | 76 Min | Lang: English \nPoetic and award-winning documentary by artist-filmmaker\, Isaac Julien. \nThis film celebrates the life and work of film-maker\, artist and gay rights activist Derek Jarman. Interview footage\, musings from Tilda Swinton\, archival footage and segments from Jarman’s work weave together to build a portrait of a bold\, inspiring and multi-dimensional character. \n  \n \nIsaac Julien and Tilda Swinton in Isaac Julien’s Derek\, 2008. Photo Nina Kellgren. Courtesy of the artist. \n  \nWe are delighted to present this film during Southampton Film Week in anticipation of Derek Jarman’s Modern Nature exhibition at John Hansard Gallery\, opening 27 November 2021. \n  \n\nIn a collaboration with Tilda Swinton\, Derek\, poetically tells the story of Derek Jarman through extensive use of archive footage. The documentary is centred in a day-long interview Jarman gave to Colin McCabe in the 80s.\n\n\nFrom Sebastiane (1976) to Blue (1992)\, Derek Jarman’s films constantly interrogated time and art\, and epitomised his own era. He was a painter\, part of that moment that made sixties London a capital of the art crucial figure of British independent cinema through the seventies\, eighties and nineties. He lived as a gay man surging the joys of Gay Liberation and the sorrows of AIDS. He lived as a participant observer\, noting with pen or camera all that passed before him – from punk to Thatcher\, from Hampstead Heath to film premiere.\n\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Fragments
DESCRIPTION:Dir: James Scott | USA 2019 | 44 mins | Age Guide 12 |Lang: English \n\n\n\nFragments covers the trajectory of Derek Boshier working between a giant drawing\, World News\, which is about ‘the contrasts between nature and machinery’\, and a series of paintings titled Night and Snow which cover ‘fashion\, soccer\, video games\, rock music and mythologies’. The title Fragments also refers to Boshier’s own film work\, clips of which are integrated within this film. \nBoshier is a British artist living in Los Angeles. Associated with the Pop art movement in London in the sixties\, he studied at the Royal College of Art with the likes of David Hockney\, RB Kitaj\, Peter Blake and Pauline Boty. It is the landscape of America\, and particularly Hollywood\, that has long been such an influence on all of these artists. \nThe statement by the artist Richard Hamilton: ‘I don’t like art films” is perhaps the springboard for all of Scott’s films on artists. Equally\, David Lynch’s comment\, ‘art films are boring’\, sums up a broad attitude to the genre. Positioning himself as both a passionate lover of both art and movies\, Scott’s films directly challenge the negative assumptions of what ‘an art film’ can be. They ignite a sense of excitement\, mystery and wonder that resides within the making of both art and cinema. \nWhile the film closely follows the making of a specific painting or drawing\, Boshier tells off-hand stories commenting on and illuminating his practice. He remarks\, ‘it was Degas\, of all people\, who said\, ‘the making of a painting is like the perpetration of a crime – the artist never paints what he sees; he always paints what he wants other people to see’. \nAs with many of Scott’s films\, this documentary explores the nature of the creative process; the camera delving into the act\, becomes almost an extension of the work\, revealing the journey from first brushstroke or pencil mark to the finished canvas or drawing. \nThe film was started in the fall of 2018 when Boshier began working for an exhibition of paintings and drawings to open at Gazelli Art House in London\, a year later. The music is composed\, played and engineered by cellist Derek Stein.\n\n\n\nOfficial Selection of International Film Festival Rotterdam 2020

SUMMARY:Stephano: The True Story of Shakespeare’s Shipwreck and virtual Q&A
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE THAT IT HAS BEEN NECESSARY TO RESCHEDULE THIS EVENT TO TAKE PLACE ON SUNDAY 22 NOVEMBER AT 2.30PM. \nFollowing the story of the only Mayflower passenger to have travelled previously to North America this 90 minute film is shown as part of Southampton’s Mayflower 400 anniversary programme. \nA decade before Mayflower left our shores Stephen Hopkins had been aboard a Jamestown-bound ship that wrecked on Bermuda inspiring Shakespeare’s final play\, The Tempest.  The film retraces Hopkin’s life criss-crossing the Atlantic \nTwice Emmy-nominated producer Andrew Giles Buckley\, a Hopkins descendant\, grew up hearing stories that New Plymouth’s iconoclast tavern keeper may have been the inspiration for The Tempest’s drunken and mutinous Stephano. In their Gumshoe Historian style\, Buckley and crew of Hit and Run History seek out the reality of a man who was everywhere at the founding of America. \nWe are pleased to present this film as part of Southampton’s Mayflower 400 programme to mark the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower and in partnership with University of Southampton’s Human Worlds Festival and delighted that the film’s director Andrew Buckley will join us after the film for a Q&A. \nThis is an online event. Ticket holders will be emailed a link to access the film and conversation which follows.

SUMMARY:Mashpee Nine and virtual Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Mashpee Nine is the story of injustice\, activism\, and vindication that emboldened cultural pride and\nintegrity for the Mashpee Wampanoag in 1976. The story documents the raid and brutal arrest of nine\nmen participating in a traditional drumming ceremony on the Mashpee Pond campsite. The events took\nplace in the context of the dramatic growth of a small Native American town on Cape Cod. The\nsubsequent trial became a celebrated cause for cultural justice within the community. \nWe are pleased to present this film as part of Southampton’s Mayflower 400 programme to mark the\n400 th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower and in partnership with University of\nSouthampton’s Human Worlds Festival and delighted that the film’s director Paula Peters will join us\nafter the film for a Q&A. \nThis is an online event. SUMMARY:“ ‘There’ but not ‘there’ ”: Challenges of representation and diversity in the archive film; a Southampton perspective
DESCRIPTION:Always a popular element of the SFW programme\, we are delighted that Wessex Film & Sound Archive join us again to present this special event for the festival.   \nWessex Film & Sound Archive holds 38\,000 historic film and sound items dating as far back as 1898.  This film looks at a selection of amateur films made by local filmmakers during the 1920-1950 period\, with a particular focus on representation and visibility of underrepresented groups.  The film commentary is provided by Zoë Viney\, Curator of Film at Wessex Film & Sound Archive (WFSA)\, based in Winchester and also Postgraduate Research Student in Film at Southampton University.  \n \nZoë’s research seeks to explore gender and class in the amateur film collection of WFSA between the years of 1920-1950.  \nWFSA is a regional repository for historic film and sound items from Hampshire\, Isle of Wight\, Berkshire\, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.  Of its 38\,000 plus items there exist some 12\,000 cinefilms.  \nIn her commentary\, Zoë seeks to explore how issues of visibility\, attribution and representation impact on our understanding of this regional collection and how this can serve to contribute to a wider view of amateur filmmaking in the UK. Zoë has a background in historic textiles and dress and in particular the interaction between gender\, socio-economics and lived experience\, as depicted in amateur film.   Zoë’s qualifications include: BA Film and History of Art and Design\, University of Southampton (2003-2006)\, MA Museums and Galleries: History of Textiles and Dress (2008)\, Projects in Controlled Environments 2 (2012) \nThis compilation of film with commentary lasts for 35 minutes.  The film is free to view and you will be sent a link when booking.  This link will be live until 11.30pm on Sunday 22 November enabling you to view at your leisure. \n\nThis event\, focusing on amateur filmmakers is part of a wider BFI\, National Lottery and Hampshire Archives Trust funded project: Making History: making movies. \n \nThe event is supported by a Mayflower 400 community heritage grant as part of Southampton’s Mayflower 400 programme. The anniversary year seeks to celebrate Southampton\, a city and a community\, built on journeys and migration\, whilst increasing access to and engagement in culture. City Eye\, the organisation which organises Southampton Film Week\, is grateful to have been awarded funds to create a Heritage Film Archive enabling exploration and greater accessibility to its collection relating to Southampton’s diverse communities.

SUMMARY:Maiden (2018)
DESCRIPTION:2018 | Dir Alex Holmes | 1:37 | Cert 12A \n  \nThe inspirational story of how Tracy Edwards\, a 24-year-old cook on charter boats\, became the skipper of the first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989. \nTracy’s dream was opposed on all sides: her male competitors thought an all-women crew would never make it\, the chauvinistic yachting press took bets on her failure\, and potential sponsors rejected her\, fearing they would die at sea and generate bad publicity. But Tracy refused to give up: she re-mortgaged her home and bought a second-hand boat\, putting everything on the line to ensure the team made it to the start line. With the support of her remarkable crew she went on to shock the sport and prove that women are the equal of men. \n  \n“... a knuckle-whitening tale of courage and grit.” Timeout \n“Instructive\, insightful and inspiring\, Maiden is a rousingly riveting record of a remarkable accomplishment that says as much about British bloody-mindedness as it does about feminist fortitude and underdog pluck” Empire Magazine \n  \n\n  \n is run by film charity      Charity Number 1089882 \nWe are delighted\, with support of our partners\, to present a number of events for free but if you are able to make a donation when purchasing your ticket or attending an event we will be incredibly grateful – and able to sustain City Eye and Southampton Film Week for years to come!  Thank you.

SUMMARY:Here for Life (2019) & Q&A
DESCRIPTION:2019 | Dir Andrea Luka Zimmerman and Adrian Jackson | 1:27 | Cert 15 \nAwarded a Special Mention\, Concorso Cineasti del Presente at 72nd Locarno Film Festival 2019 | Discovery Award Long-list\, British Independent Film Awards 2019 \nAn uncommon story told on common ground by ten Londoners. All have lives shaped by loss and love\, trauma and bravery\, struggle and resistance. They grapple with a system stacked against them. They dance\, steal and eat together; agree and disagree\, celebrate their differences and share their talents. The lines between one person’s story and another’s performance of it are blurred\, and the borders between reality and fiction are equally porous. Eventually coming together on a makeshift stage built on reclaimed ground between two train tracks\, they prompt a debate about the world we live in\, who has stolen what from whom\, and how things might be fixed. Here for Life marks the culmination of a long collaboration between film-maker Andrea Luka Zimmerman and theatre-maker Adrian Jackson\, a troupe of Londoners and a dog. \n  \nWe are delighted that spoken word poet and performer in the film Errol McGlashan\, together with Johanna Von Fischer from Modern Films\, the distributor of Here for Life\, will join us for this special screening. Please join us in welcoming them to Southampton to discuss this important film. \n  \nAndrea Luka Zimmerman (co-director) said of this project “for me what is most valuable is the sense of a creative and collaborative waywardness and unpredictability in the film: that tenderness and tension co-exist\, often in the same moment\, feels to me something true to our shared experience.” \nAdrian Jackson (co-director) comments that “if this film tells us anything about London today\, it’s that there are many unconsidered lives surviving against the odds. It feels important to tell these kinds of stories today – to hear from people who are often ‘othered’ in a variety of ways – to show a world we don’t see enough of.” \n  \n‘A film of great compassion and political and aesthetic ambition\, in which the idea of a collective is prioritised for a change\, but without sacrificing or downplaying the individual voices and idiosyncrasies that it comprises’ – Kieron Corless\, Sight & Sound \n‘A folk tale\, a thing of indeterminate\, multiple belonging. In the film\, a poetics and a politics of the common is palpable’. – Laura Staab\, Open City Docs \n‘Fluidly integrates theatrical performance and process into a beautiful piece of filmmaking’ – Hettie Judah\, Art Monthly \n‘“Here for Life” is a moving film about hardship in London’ – Prospero\, The Economist  \n is run by film charity      Charity Number 1089882 \nWe are delighted\, with support of our partners\, to present a number of events for free but if you are able to make a donation when purchasing your ticket or attending an event we will be incredibly grateful – and able to sustain City Eye and Southampton Film Week for years to come!  Thank you.
