SUMMARY:On Resistance Street Regional Premiere w/Q&A
DESCRIPTION:ON RESISTANCE STREET\nUnclassified (age guide 16+) | 2023 | Dir. Richard David | Documentary | UK | 120 mins \n \n\n  \nON RESISTANCE STREET is a feature documentary\, produced by Montaj Media Village in Southampton. The film is an in-depth examination of the role which music plays in the fight against fascism and racism and features many renowned musicians\, writers\, commentators and activists. Among contributors are original members of Steel Pulse\, Aswad\, The Sex Pistols\, Stiff Little Fingers\, The Levellers\, The Men They Couldn’t Hang\, Belfast Punk Godfather Terri Hooley\, author and Joe Strummer biographer Chris Salewicz\, Fire Brigade Union leader Matt Wrack\, National Organiser of ‘Stand up to Racism’ Weyman Bennett and many others.  \nORS was a two year project\, shot on location in England\, Belfast and New York.  It carries an original soundtrack of 20 songs which will be released as an album in 2024.  \nThe film revisits the ‘Rock Against Racism’ movement of the late 70s\, noting its influence on future waves of radical artists and political activists. It also shines a light – for the first time on film – on a 1950s organisation ”The Stars Campaign For Inter-racial Friendship” which was founded by a group of famous British Jazz musicians and entertainers\, in the wake of the 1958 Notting Hill riots and provided venues in West London for black and white youth to socialise together. The role played by Punk Rock\, in uniting young people in 1970s sectarian Belfast\, is also featured. \nIn addition to historical elements\, ORS tracks the disturbing contemporary drifts to the Right across the political west and the role of anti-racism social media groups inside today’s cultural battlegrounds. It looks at Grime music today and the historic role played by black musicians in British music. \n  \nSouthampton Film Week is delighted to present this Regional premiere of ON RESISTANCE STREET in partnership with Solent University. A Q&A with Director\, Richard David and Crew will follow the screening. \n  \n

SUMMARY:POWAQQATSI (1988)
DESCRIPTION:POWAQQATSI\nCert U | 1988 | Dir. Godfrey Reggio | Documentary/Music| USA | 99 mins \n \nFeature film screening\, programmed as part of MAST – Mayflower Studios Emergency Season. \nPowaqqatsi\, also known as Powaqqatsi: Life in Transformation\, is a 1988 American non-narrative film directed by experimental filmmaker\, Godfrey Reggio and is the second film in the Qatsi trilogy. \nFive years after Godfrey Reggio stunned audiences with Koyaanisqatsi\, he again joined forces with composer Philip Glass and other collaborators for a second chapter. This is the most intensely spiritual segment of Reggio’s philosophical and visually remarkable Qatsi Trilogy. Here\, Reggio turns his sights on third-world nations in the Southern Hemisphere. Forgoing the sped-up aesthetic of the first film\, Powaqqatsi employs a meditative slow motion in order to reveal the beauty of the traditional ways of life in those parts of the planet\, and to show how cultures there are being eroded as their environments are taken over by industry. \n\nSouthampton Film Week & MAST – Mayflower Studios\, previously screened Koyaanisqatsi (The 1st film in the Qatsi trilogy)  as part of Southampton Film Week-End: Screening Green in 2022 – a programme of environmentally themed films. We are delighted to programme the sequel\, Powaqqatsi for MAST’s Emergency Season \nThe temperature is rising\, there’s plastic in the oceans\, the rainforest is disappearing…and maybe using a ‘bag for life’ isn’t going to turn it all around. MAST Mayflower Studios brings you EMERGENCY\, a season of work across October and November\, relating to the climate crisis and asking the difficult questions about the future of our planet. Join us as we endeavour to spread awareness of the climate crisis through theatre\, spoken word\, live performance and more!

SUMMARY:THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME WITH LIVE COMPTON ORGAN ACCOMPANIMENT
DESCRIPTION:THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME\nCert PG | 1923 | Dir. Wallace Worsley | Drama/Romance | USA | 133 mins \nSouthampton Film Week and Silver Street Films proudly present The Hunchback of Notre Dame with Aaron Hawthorne at the Guildhall Compton Organ.\n  \n \nStep into the mesmerising world of silent cinema as Aaron Hawthorne takes you on a thrilling musical journey alongside the iconic 100-year-old silent thriller\, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Get ready to be transported to the enchanting streets of Paris as Aaron breathes new life into this cinematic gem. \n In 15th-century Paris\, the brother of the archdeacon plots with the gypsy king to foment a peasant revolt. Meanwhile\, a freakish hunchback falls in love with a gypsy dancer. The Hunchback of Notre Dame was Universal’s largest-scale silent film and paved the way for the rest of their enduring legacy of gothic horror from the golden age of film. A heart-rending adaption of Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel\, Notre Dame de Paris with a legendary performance by Lon Chaney. \nThe Guildhall Compton Pipe Organ is one of Southampton’s greatest hidden treasures.  Witness to all the artists\, bands\, performances and events which have taken place at the 02 Guildhall\, the organ pipes wait patiently and quietly above the stage for opportunities such as these when at the hands of the maestro they are brought to life.  Our organ in Southampton is wonderful and unique\, providing two beautiful walnut consoles – one classic and one theatre\, or Variety as it was originally called.  The consoles are positioned either side of the stage and like the pipes above the proscenium arch generally go unnoticed. \nThis event provides a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the wonder of the silent-age as it would have been experienced at the time The Hunchback of Notre Dame was produced\, whilst enjoying the magnificent Compton Organ and a glimpse of an often over-looked jewel in the City’s rich heritage. \nIf you enjoyed last year’s screening of Buster Keaton’s Sherlock Jr (1924) with live music from the Compton organ than you will love this event! \n  \nTickets O2 presale from Thursday 26th October. General on sale from Saturday 28th October.

SUMMARY:ONLY LOVE MATTERS
DESCRIPTION:ONLY LOVE MATTERS\nCert 12A | 2023 | Dir. Dr Kamran Qureshi | Romance/Drama | UK | 92 mins \nFeature film screening plus Q&A with Director Dr Kamran Qureshi\, hosted by Dr Adam Vaughan. \n \nFresh from the successful UK premiere at BFI Southbank for the World Intersex Awareness Day\, Solent University in partnership with Southampton Film Week presents Only Love Matters. \nOnly Love Matters is a romantic feature film set in London\, UK. It is the first feature film in cinema history to have intersex lead characters set in the UK. The film has won over 30 awards in the festival circuit around the world. Over 300 collaborators from across the globe participated in the making of Only Love Matters from US\, UK\, Germany\, France\, China\, Russia\, India and Pakistan. The film introduces many young brilliant actors. Only Love Matters introduces real life intersex lead characters and contributes to the visual representation of intersex and towards equality\, diversity and inclusion in global cinema. \nOnly Love Matters is a story of sacrifices of a mother for her adopted daughter and her struggle for the rights of people like her through the discovery of a life-changing book\, Only Love Matters\, by a young woman. There are two women\, two timelines\, two generations and always the one thing that truly matters is Love. It sheds light on the social\, psychological and medical issues of intersex individuals in British society. While discussing the excessively highlighted issue of infantile sex reassignment surgeries\, the film flags the discrimination and impact of society’s behaviour that leads to the mental health issues created for intersex people and their children. It also reveals the unique story of intersex-mother and daughter’s romantic lives\, two different cultures and two different periods running simultaneously. It is a story of love\, relationships\, existence and acceptance. It examines the powerful bonds between us and inspires great change. \nThe film features two original songs\, a regional language desert song ‘Piya\,’ composed in India by Rishi Singh and sung by Manjeera Ganguly\, while the English song\, ‘Only Love Matters\,’ is a slow ballad\, composed by Phillip McHugh in UK and sung by Ashley Sollars and Josephine McHugh. \n \nThe story\, research and direction are by award-winning director Dr Kamran Qureshi\, who is also a fellow of UK Higher Education Academy. He is a Lecturer in Film Production at the Solent University Southampton and co-founder of KQ Movies and Evergreen Media Europe Ltd. The film is produced by Dr Iram Qureshi\, a Senior Lecturer in Ravensbourne University\, London and the founder of KQ Movies. Both as a team have an extensive knowledge of British and Hollywood Cinema. They both are PhD graduates in (British and American) Film and TV from England\, United Kingdom. The screenwriter is Iannis Aliferis\, an award-winning screenwriter. The team has years of experience in film\, television and media\, not only in professional practice but also as academics. \nThe film’s principal photography took place in the UK including London\, Beaconsfield and Norwich\, with a small portion in the colourful area of Great Indian Desert. There were over 40 locations in the movie including Frith Manor Equestrian Centre\, London\, Terrace Gardens\, Richmond Hill\, West London Film Studios\, Etcetera Theatre\, London and the University of East Anglia\, Norwich. It features the oldest pub in England\, The Royal Standard of England\, Beaconsfield\, where feature film The Theory of Everything was filmed. According to the United Nations up to 1.7 percent of babies are born with sex characteristics that don’t fit typical definitions of male and female. Previously known term was hermaphrodite\, research has established over 30 variations in sex characteristics that humans are born with. Till to date\, intersex is a taboo for many including in the US\, UK\, Australia and India. \nIntersex have been discriminated against in every field\, whether it’s sports\, entertainment\, education or workplaces. During the process of research and writing the screenplay\, the team was engaged with international intersex experts and organisations. The film’s research was conducted in the University of East Anglia and the film clips/research was presented and discussed at the INIA (Intersex New Interdisciplinary Approaches) Network supported by the European Commission; University of Westminster\, London; Nagoya University\, Japan; Solent University Southampton\, and University of Reading\, UK. Seven English language movies have been made in the US and Australia so far\, with intersex characters. First\, being American\, was Freaks (1932)\, which featured minor intersex character\, Josephine Joseph. The only Australian intersex film is Predestination (2014)\, which mis-represented intersex people. This release is set to be a significant milestone in cinematic history. \nOnly Love Matters has done phenomenally well on the film festival circuit and has won multiple awards including Best Director\, Best Producer\, Best Feature Film\, Best Screenplay\, Best Production Design\, Best Actress\, Best Editing\, Best Cinematography\, Best Makeup\, Best Romantic film\, Best Women film\, Best Message and Best Original Idea.\nhttps://onlylovemattersmovie.com/news

Emmanuelle Nicot | Drama | France/Belgium | 85 mins \n \nFeature film screening with The Phoenix Film Society at Union Films. \nDalva (Zelda Samson) lives alone with her father. With their help\, she begins to learn how to be a child again. \nIn her poignant feature debut\, director Emmanuelle Nicot explores the ramifications of childhood sexual abuse with sensitivity and grace\, rejecting a sensationalised depiction of trauma and examining the complexity of coercive\, controlling parental relationships in detail. SUMMARY:THE MARK OF ZORRO with live musical accompaniment
DESCRIPTION:THE MARK OF ZORRO \nCert U | 1920 | Dir. Fred Niblo | Adventure/Western/Romance | USA | 80 mins \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nSilent feature screening with live musical accompaniment \nThis genre-defining swashbuckler adventure is considered to be the world’s first action adventure film and the first time the iconic masked hero was portrayed on screen. \nFred Niblo’s The Mark of Zorro (1920) not only gave birth to a genre but established a new persona for star Douglas Fairbanks. Just like Fairbank’s masked hero the film catapulted him from standard film actor to one of Hollywood’s first superstars. Elements of the film and Fairbanks’ portrayal would later inspire Bob Kane’s most famous of heroes\, Batman. \nSet in Spanish California\, Fairbanks portrays Don Diego Vega\, a comically effete young nobleman with a taste for tasselled sombreros and juvenile silk-hanky magic tricks. But when danger calls\, Diego swathes himself in black\, straps on a well-honed sword and storms the countryside as the mysterious Zorro. Slicing his initial into the faces of the “sentinels of oppression” and pausing only to boldly romance the woman (Marguerite De La Motte) to whom his shy alter-ego can hardly summon the courage to speak. \nThe Mark of Zorro is an uplifting escape adventure with the thrills which would be copied the world over throughout the rest of the history of cinema. \nThis special screening is co-produced by Turner Sims with Southampton Film Week in partnership with South West Silents. Live musical accompaniment comes from pianist Meg Morley and drummer Emiliano Caroselli. \nMeg Morely is an Australian-born\, UK-based pianist\, composer and improviser. Meg creates music within diverse artistic genres (silent film\, contemporary dance and ballet\, solo piano\, contemporary jazz ensembles and electronic music). Classically-trained from the age of two\, Meg has worked with various dance companies (English National Ballet\, Rambert Company\, Matthew Bourne\, Pina Bausch). She performs and composes for international film festivals and institutions (BFI\, Nederlands Silent Film Festival\, Kino Lorber). She recently released a second album with Meg Morley Trio (Richard Sadler on bass\, Emiliano Caroselli on drums) who have also recorded and toured her original scores for silent film. \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:SFW22: Neptune Frost
DESCRIPTION:Neptune Frost (2021)\nSaturday 19 November 2022 at 7:00pm\nDir. Saul Williams\, Anisia Uzeyman | USA/Rwanda | 1hr 45m | 15| Sci-fi | English subtitles  \nAn intersex African hacker\, a coltan miner and the virtual marvel born as a result of their union.  \nAfro-futurist fantasia Neptune Frost\, is a wondrous\, thrilling sci-fi punk musical from multi-hyphenate\, multidisciplinary artists Saul Williams and Anisia Uzeyman who bring their unique dynamism to the vision of Neptune Frost. It is a sci-fi-punk musical that’s a visually wondrous amalgamation of themes\, ideas\, and songs that they have been exploring in their work\, including on Williams’ 2016 album MartyrLoserKing.  \n \nNeptune Frost takes place in the hilltops of Burundi\, where a group of escaped coltan miners camp in an otherworldly e-waste dump\, they attempt a takeover of the authoritarian regime exploiting the region’s natural resources and its people. When an intersex runaway and an escaped miner find each other through cosmic forces\, their connection sparks glitches within the greater divine circuitry.  \nSet between states of being – past and present\, dream and waking life\, colonised and free\, male and female\, memory and prescience – Neptune Frost is an invigorating and empowering direct download to the cerebral cortex and a call to reclaim technology for progressive political ends.  \n“In a word: Mesmerising. Neptune Frost is truly cinema in poetry\, a visually (and aurally) stunning work of art that feels like it should be on display in a museum.” – feedback from young audience members  \n\nOne of the most unique sci-fi films of recent years\, Neptune Frost is screening at MAST Mayflower Studios on Saturday 19 November. \nThis performance will be relaxed. There is a relaxed attitude to noise and movement\, and a chillout space will be available before\, during and after the show for anyone that needs a quiet space.  \n is run by film charity      Charity Number 1089882

SUMMARY:SFW22: All That Breathes
DESCRIPTION:All That Breathes (2021)\nSaturday 19 November 2022 at 3:00pm\nDir. Shaunak Sen | India | 1hr 31m |12A | Documentary | English subtitles  \nAgainst the darkening backdrop of Delhi’s apocalyptic air and escalating violence\, two brothers devote their lives to protect a casualty of the turbulent times: the bird known as the Black Kite.  \n \nIn one of the world’s most populated cities\, two brothers — Nadeem and Saud — devote their lives to the quixotic effort of protecting the black kite\, a majestic bird of prey essential to the ecosystem of New Delhi that has been falling from the sky at alarming rates. Amid environmental toxicity and social unrest\, the ‘kite brothers’ spend day and night caring for the creatures in their makeshift avian basement hospital. Director Shaunak Sen (Cities of Sleep) explores the connection between the kites and the Muslim brothers who help them return to the skies\, offering a mesmerizing chronicle of inter-species coexistence.  \nNadeem and Saud live in a working-class\, predominantly Muslim neighbourhood running their soap dispenser business. Their passion\, however\, is their budding organisation ‘Wildlife Rescue’ and its work to save black kites injured in mid-air collisions caused by the city’s terrifyingly poor air quality and opaque skies. Lobbying for donations while lovingly tending to these majestic birds of prey\, Nadeem and Saud are a two-man band intervening to make change. All the while city life is dominated by pollution\, overpopulation and climate change\, and violent protests against India’s anti-Muslim Citizen Act.  \nEverything is connected in Sen’s dreamy and impressionistic film which provokes thinking around the intersections of the climate and environmental crises – and the people they most affect. This prescient and remarkable documentary explores the relationship between humanity and the natural world\, and the value of individual actions against monumental systemic problems.  \n\nWatch All That Breathes at MAST on Saturday 19 November as part of Southampton Film Week\, tickets available through the MAST Box Office. \nThis performance will be relaxed. There is a relaxed attitude to noise and movement\, and a chillout space will be available before\, during and after the show for anyone that needs a quiet space.  \n is run by film charity      Charity Number 1089882

Along with his friends and performers – including the singing pigs Rosita and Gunter\, porcupine rocker Ash and shy Gorilla Tommy – Buster heads to the city to discover that the only way the show will go on is if he can convince reclusive rockstar-lion Clay Calloway to come out of retirement to be part of the show. However\, since Clay’s wife passed away\, he is reluctant to ever go back onto the stage again. Full of recognizable musical numbers and a slapstick sensibility\, Sing 2 also explores the importance of music in our lives as more than just a form of entertainment. \nTaking place from 8-25 November\, the Into Film Festival helps educators bring learning to life for 5-19 year olds across the UK by inspiring young people to watch\, understand and make film in new and creative ways. \nPlaces will be offered for free on a first-come\, first-served basis\, with attendance this year limited to one school group per event to help us to ensure the safety of all attendees and allow us to maximise the impact on the largest possible audience of children and young people across the UK. \nInto Film supports teachers and educators to achieve a wide range of effective learning outcomes in their use of film. SUMMARY:SFW22: Right of Way
DESCRIPTION:Right of Way (2022)\nThursday 17 November 2022 at 3:00pm\nDir. Various | UK | 1hr 30m | 12A | Archive footage & New Artist Film | Captioned for the hard of hearing  \nWe’re told we all have a right to roam in the countryside – but does that apply to everyone equally?  \n \nRight of Way is a new feature-length programme that mixes stunning new artists’ commissions with historical archive films to explore the wider landscape of questions around access and inclusion in the UK countryside.  \nThe programme is inspired by the foundation of the National Trails. Set up to resist sweeping industrialisation\, these protected landscapes were created with a vision to ‘connect people to the rural landscape’\, but during the COVID-19 pandemic – as people realised anew the importance of nature and open spaces for our health and mental wellbeing – inequalities of access to rural land were being exposed\, revealing the disconnect felt by millions of people towards the UK countryside. A 2019 government review found that many Black\, Asian and ethnically diverse people view the countryside as an ‘irrelevant white\, middle-class club’\, concluding that this divide is only going to widen as society changes and ‘the countryside will end up being irrelevant to the country that actually exists’.  \nThe new commissions interrupt and challenge the enduring perception of the rural idyll as an untouched and unchanging space where time stands still. What happens when Black\, Asian and other ethnically diverse people enter these landscapes? How can our natural spaces be homes to protest\, trespass\, activism and raves? Paired with archive films this programme is a terrific platform for debate on historical and contemporary discussions about who has a right to the great outdoors and who is excluded from it.  \nDetails of the full programme are below. \n\n  \nNew Commissions:\nblack strangers\nDan Guthrie | UK | 2022 \nAfter seeing him mentioned on a Bishop’s Transcript held in Gloucestershire Archives\, Dan goes for a walk in the woods in search of Daniel\, a man buried in Nympsfield on the 31st December 1719 and described on the document as ‘a black stranger’. Whilst walking\, Dan talks directly to Daniel\, speculating about the parallels between him and his namesake and wrestling aloud with the problems that come with trying to read the archive at face value and fill in its gaps. \n\nPastoral Malaise\nUfuoma Essi | UK | 2022 \n\nPastoral Malaise is a meditative reflection on the absences found in rural pastoral environments\, that are often framed by a false romanticism and picturesque conventions\, constructed as tourist sites within rural landscapes across Britain. Inspired by Una Marson’s poem Spring In England and Dorris Henderson’s 1965 cover of the popular British folk song One Morning In May\, the film recalls an imagined relationship to the English landscape told through memories and speculative histories. \nSyncopated Green\nArjuna Neuman | UK | 2022 \n\nSyncopated Green reflects on the history of outdoor free parties in the English countryside\, using rave music\, past and present\, to help forget the ‘official’ portrayal of England as picturesque\, nostalgic\, white\, and rural. The film invites rave music into the English landscape – turning imperial history inside out. Somewhere between a music video\, a memoir and an essay\, it asks: how might our future be different if we had other histories to lean on – and dance with? \nArchive Films:\nEastbourne\nGilbert Tomes | UK | 1958 \n\nHolidaying in Eastbourne\, the Sanderstead Youth Fellowship take in an organised walk over the South Downs from Beachy Head to Cuckmere Haven. Courtesy of Screen Archive South East at the University of Brighton \nPilgrim’s Way\nWilliam N. Boyle | UK | 1956 \n\nFrom Farnham to Canterbury\, this 120-mile trek across the famous Pilgrim’s Way section of the North Downs Way takes in some of south-east England’s prettiest towns\, villages and pastures. Courtesy of BFI National Film & Television Archive \nFather Thames\nunknown | UK | 1935 \n\nRecorded over 60 years prior to the establishment of the Thames Path National Trail\, this film follows England’s best-known river for 185 miles as it ambles from its source in the Cotswolds through several rural counties and into the heart of London. Courtesy of BFI National Film & Television Archive \nHoliday on the North Norfolk Coast\nunknown | UK | 1952 \n\nGlasgow’s Countryside Club visits the North Norfolk Coast\, taking in sights along the still-to-be-established National Trail Path. In this clip the group journeys from Morston Quay to explore Blakeney National Nature Reserve. Courtesy of the East Anglian Film Archive at the University of East Anglia \nSouth Downs Way\nunknown | UK | 1975 \n\nThis amateur travelogue-style documentary follows the route of the South Downs Way three years after its official opening\, accompanied by a voiceover providing historical narrative on the route and local history of the areas it passes through. Courtesy of Screen Archive South East at the University of Brighton \nNorfolk\, 1986\nunknown | UK | 1986 \n\nOne week before Prince Charles opens the Peddars Way Long Distance Path\, local journalist Bruce Robinson talks through the book he has written about the historic Roman road it follows. Courtesy of the East Anglian Film Archive at the University of East Anglia \nCountry Ways: The Ridgeway in October\nPaul Slater | UK | 1988 \n\nITV’s popular Country Ways television series explores The Ridgeway National Trail through the eyes of the people that live and work along the historic pathway\, commonly known as ‘Britain’s oldest road’. Courtesy of the Wessex Film and Sound Archive at Hampshire County Council \nCheck out this rousing and eccentric short film collection\, screening at MAST on Thursday 17 November. \nThis performance will be relaxed. There is a relaxed attitude to noise and movement\, and a chillout space will be available before\, during and after the show for anyone that needs a quiet space.  \n is run by film charity      Charity Number 1089882

SUMMARY:SFW22: Buster Keaton's Sherlock Jr at Guildhall with Compton Pipe Organ
DESCRIPTION:Sherlock Jr. (1924) with live accompaniment from Richard Hills at the Compton pipe organ\nTuesday 15 November 2022 at 7:30pm\nDir. Buster Keaton | USA | 45m | U | Feature with live music \nA film projectionist longs to be a detective\, and puts his meagre skills to work when he is framed by a rival for stealing his girlfriend’s father’s pocketwatch.  \nWe are thrilled to announce that this event will begin with a performance by Richard Hills at the organ\, demonstrating the range and full wonder of its capability\, followed by an interval and then the film screening with accompaniment. \n \nAfter a break during lockdown and the Covid pandemic it’s a joy to welcome Silver Street Films back to SFW for our longstanding film week tradition\, a classic silent film with live accompaniment from the historic Guildhall Compton Pipe Organ. Celebrated Cinema Organist Richard Hills will be presenting live soundtrack to the Buster Keaton classic\,  1924’s Sherlock Jr. \nArguably the cleverest of Keaton’s 1920’s films\, this detective fantasy takes place inside the head of a cinema projectionist (Keaton) who – in a sequence that’s a technical marvel to this day – dreams himself into the screen only to be flummoxed by the film’s editing. This film includes many other fantastical set pieces\, including one stunt that even fractured Keaton’s neck\, the footage of which made it into the final film. Keaton suffered from blinding migraines for years afterwards and was unaware of the reason\, until a doctor diagnosed him in the 1930s. \n \nThe Guildhall Compton Pipe Organ is one of Southampton’s greatest hidden treasures. \nThis event provides a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the wonder of the silent-age as it would have been experienced at the time Sherlock Jr. was produced\, whilst enjoying the magnificent Compton Organ and a glimpse of an often over-looked jewel in the City’s rich heritage. \nTickets cost £14.95 or £12.75 (concession) including booking fee from the O2 Guildhall. \nPlease note that seating WILL BE PROVIDED although the Guildhall booking system implies that this is a standing event! \n \n is run by film charity      Charity Number 1089882

SUMMARY:SFW22: Los Fantasmas with Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Los Fantasmas (2020)\nTuesday 15 November 2022 at 7:00pm\nDir. Sebastián Lojo | Guatemala | 1hr 31m |12A | Drama | English subtitles  \nBy day\, Koki is a nice tourist guide in Guatemala City\, but at night he lures men to a hotel – where they are relieved of their property.  \n \nHandsome Koki earns a living in Guatemala City winning people’s confidence\, after which their possessions go missing. By day he is a tourist guide\, but at night he seduces men and takes them to Carlos’ hotel\, where they are robbed. Koki and Carlos are two sides of the same coin; their fates are intertwined through their violent activities. One day\, Koki is targeted by one of the men he stole from\, leading Carlos to replace him with another good-looking young man. The shock of this sudden removal of his means of subsistence causes Koki to realise what his life was like\, in an almost out-of-body experience. \nThe feature debut from Sebastián Lojo and Remi Itani\, Los Fantasmas had its premiere in Rotterdam and has played in festivals around the world\, which is a remarkable achievement for an indie film that came out of a country with little film infrastructure but great stories to tell. The film’s use of location\, situation and storytelling are all the richer for this character study that explores what people do to survive.\n\nProducer Remi Itani will join us for the screening and a Q&A.\n is run by film charity      Charity Number 1089882 \nWe are delighted\, with support of our partners\, to present a number of events for free but if you are able to make a donation when purchasing your ticket or attending an event we will be incredibly grateful – and able to sustain City Eye and Southampton Film Week for years to come!  Thank you.

DESCRIPTION:A Bunch of Amateurs (2022)\nMonday 14 November 2022 at 7:00pm\nDir. Kim Hopkins | UK | 1hr 35m | 12A | Documentary  \nOnly a miracle can save Britain’s oldest amateur film club from its final demise. Sometimes miracles come from unexpected places.  \n \nMembers of Bradford Movie Makers\, the most quintessentially British working-class filmmaking club\, grow old amid flickering memories and the brutal reckoning of their final years. Desperately clinging to their dreams\, and to each other\, fuelled by endless cups of tea\, this quietly hilarious\, profoundly moving portrait of shared artistic folly speaks to the delusional escapist dreamer in us all and to the need to spend time together face to face in an increasingly lonely\, digital age.  \n“A profoundly moving and funny film that acts as an extraordinary document of the power of community and art.” – Guardian  \n“A thoroughly moving and ultimately joyful affair” – Cineuropa  \n\nWatch A Bunch of Amateurs at Solent University on Monday 14 November\, at 7:00pm. \n is run by film charity      Charity Number 1089882 \nWe are delighted\, with support of our partners\, to present a number of events for free but if you are able to make a donation when purchasing your ticket or attending an event we will be incredibly grateful – and able to sustain City Eye and Southampton Film Week for years to come!  Thank you.

SUMMARY:SFW22: Maisie
DESCRIPTION:Maisie (2021)\nSunday 13 November 2022 at 7:00pm\nDir.  Lee Cooper  | UK | 1h 16m | 15 | Documentary | Subtitles \n‘Old Age can be a Drag.’ \nAn intimate portrait of ageing and friendship as Maisie Trollette\, Britain’s oldest drag act\, prepares\nfor his 85th birthday and meets 87 year old Darcelle XV\, Guinness World Record Holder from the\nUSA for the very first time \nImage credit: Sam Parsons | All copyright – Proper Charlie Productions 202\nAfter fifty long years in the business\, Mr. David Raven is still shaking his sequins as ‘Maisie\nTrollette’\, Britain’s oldest working drag artiste. David’s 85th is fast approaching and a special birthday performance has been arranged in the UK’s capital of camp\, Brighton.\nAt 87\, Walter Cole is The Guinness Book Of Records Oldest Performing Drag Queen in the\nWorld and he is flying over from Portland\, USA to meet David for the very first time.\nBut professional rivalries soon flare between Britain’s feisty Pantomime Dame and America’s\nregal Pageant Queen\, and as his birthday grows nearer David must deal with the unique\nchallenges that performing in your eighties can bring.\nDavid has recently been diagnosed with health issues\, and the surprise birthday event only adds\nto his growing anxiety. But ever the professional\, ‘Maisie’ gives the performance of a lifetime as\nshe looks back on half-a-century of entertaining.\nFeaturing Broadway classics such as ‘Lady is a Tramp’\, ‘One’\, and ‘If I Never Sing Another Song’\,\nMAISIE is a hilarious\, heart-warming and often heart-breaking peek into the world of a character\nmore colourful than his gowns. \nDirector’s Statement\nThere are many amazing ‘coming out’ stories committed to film\, but how often do we get to see\nthe other end of the tale? I wanted to explore what it means to be queer in our twilight years.\nOver the course of three years I was fortunate to be granted unique access into the colourful\nworld of both David Raven and ‘Maisie’ as he prepared for his 85th birthday with all the\nchallenges that can bring.\nThe first cut was a very different film. The ‘life of’ rather than a ‘day in the life of’. But the fashion\nart director in me became obsessed with the intimate detail. His use of an old Brillo pad to apply\nhis foundation. The soiled old tights he uses as a wig cap.\nI soon realised that the voiceovers and anecdotes were detracting from the real story. Instead\, I\nwanted to capture the beauty of old age. The drama that can be found in watching an old man\nstruggle to get into a pair of glitter heels.\nOld age is not ‘sexy’\, and the LGBTQ older community in particular don’t want to talk about it.\nBut who will look after us when we are older if we don’t have children or are estranged from our\nfamilies at a younger age?\nHopefully we have created a story that transcends the LGBTQ community and is ultimately an\ninspirational look at the life of a remarkable individual. \n\nThe fifteenth annual Southampton Film Week – Celebrating film across the city. \n11-21 November 2022 www.southamptonfilmweek.com \nA note on ticket prices: \nAt Southampton Film Week we want everyone to be able to watch great films together. In response to the financial challenges that so many people are facing\, and with the support of our partners\, we have adopted a ‘pay what you can’ approach for some of our events. \nIf you are able to pay towards the cost of your ticket and to help make the festival affordable for others please do buy a ticket or make a donation. \nIf making a donation would be difficult for you financially please don’t be deterred from booking a ticket and coming to enjoy this event. Please use the free ticket option if this is best for you. \nEnjoy the film and thank you for your support.

DESCRIPTION:Dir: Bong Joon-Ho |South Korea | 119 Mins | 15  \nMarrying narrative and visual elements of classic monster movies with his masterful visual style\, tongue-in-cheek humour\, and socially conscious theming\, Bong Joon-Ho’s The Host is popcorn entertainment at its finest.   \nIn the year 2000\, an American military pathologist orders his Korean assistant to dump 200 bottles of formaldehyde down a drain leading into the Han River. Six years later\, this mistake will resurface in the form of a kaiju-like monster\, attacking people who live along the banks of the Han. Half Godzilla\, half An Inconvenient Truth\, Bong Joon-Ho’s The Host is the greatest monster movie in decades.   \nBefore his Oscar Winning parable of class injustice\, Parasite\, Bong Joon-Ho was already well regarded as a masterful director of dense\, yet fundamentally entertaining thrillers. The Host\, released in 2006\, is a further example of Bong Joon-Ho’s innate ability to channel larger contextualising themes into white-knuckle popcorn entertainment.  \n  \nDiscounts and Concessions available through the box office.\n– Access Membership Companion seats 75% discount at all performances.\n– Groups 10+ £2.00 off.\n– Festival ticket offer – get 25% off full-price tickets if you book any 4 events across the two days.

SUMMARY:YOUTH UNSTOPPABLE
