SUMMARY:MINARI - INTO FILM FESTIVAL
DESCRIPTION:We are very excited that SFW and IntoFilm Festival are coming together again in 2021 to offer school groups to enjoy fabulous film\, and we will once again be screening at MAST – Mayflower Studios on Guildhall Square in Southamptpon. \nThe Into Film Festival is a free\, annual\, nationwide celebration of film & education for 5-19 year olds.  It helps educators bring learning to life for 5-19 year olds across the UK by inspiring young people to watch\, understand and make film in new and creative ways. \nWe are offering 2 films this year Minari (2020)\, with an age guide of 14+ and Mary and the Witch’s Flower (2018) with an age guide of 5 – 11. \nPlease note that booking for this event is through IntoFilm only. \nMinari \nSet in the 1980s\, a Korean family sets up a farming business in Southern America. \nThe American Dream and its wavering promise is experienced through the perspective of a Korean family of four who set up a farm in Arkansas. Set in the 1980s\, the film follows the struggles of parents Monica and Jacob as they face the challenges of providing for their family in a world that is hostile to immigrants alongside their disintegrating marriage. Their struggles are further reflected in the youngest in the family\, the curious David\, who tries to make sense of his Korean-American identity when their eccentric grandmother Soon-ja comes to live with them. Loosely based on director Lee Isaac Chung’s childhood\, Minari is an intimate and intricate look at family\, change and American society that explores the unique perspective of growing up as a first-generation immigrant. \nInto Film will be strictly adhering to all current Covid-19 Government guidelines\, with continuous monitoring of the Public Health guidance in each UK nation. Please visit the MAST website to check out their specific Covid-19 measures. \nPlaces will be offered for free on a first-come\, first-served basis\, with attendance this year limited to one school group per event to help us to ensure the safety of all attendees and allow us to maximise the impact on the largest possible audience of children and young people across the UK. \nThere is a minimum booking size for each event at this year’s Festival. As each event will only have one group attending\, we’re encouraging schools to book as many seats as they can to ensure that as many young people as possible can benefit from the Festival. The exact minimum booking size for this event can be found on the booking form.

SUMMARY:INVISIBLE
DESCRIPTION:  \nAn older woman self-isolates in a stranger’s tiny white attic. This film explores her experience of becoming…what? Invisible? \nINVISIBLE is made by Brenda Waite\, a performance artist aged 60 and Anna Cady\, an artist film maker aged 70. Brenda came to live in Anna’s attic at the beginning of the first lockdown. \nAs post menopausal women Brenda and Anna had discovered what it felt like to become invisible. But then there was Covid. And it was said\, “if all the old people stayed inside we could get on with our lives.”  The fight against ageism took on a whole new perspective. \nDeciding to become visible by making this film during lockdown\, Brenda and Anna explore what it means to experience imposed isolation in a small space. \nThis is a beautiful\, experimental film devised in the process of making; it incorporates physical theatre\, improvisation and existential comedy. \n“As post menopausal women we find that we become less visible; As women artists historically we were virtually not visible; \nAs a post-menopausal-female-performing-artist-isolated-in-a-tiny-white-attic-with-only-skylights-to-connect-with-the-outside-world Brenda became INvisible” \nINVISIBLE will be screened on a continuous loop. Running Time: 8 minutes. \n\nAudience Feedback: \n“Lockdown has affected me; there can be no-one who has not experienced some kind of compression of their life-force.  Even wearing purple is of little use when there is nowhere to go!” \n“Intensely evocative of isolation and the angst that accompanies it. I particularly liked the white aesthetic. The colour of mourning in some cultures. \nI’ll be watching it again!” \n  \nFor more information about the artists: \nBrenda Waite:  brendawaite.blogspot.com/ \nAnna Cady: www.annacady.com   \n  \nDuring SFW21 Brenda and Anna will be presenting an interdisciplinary workshop relating to the themes explored in INVISIBLE. Details of this event can be found here. \n
