SUMMARY:The Phantom of the Opera with Donald Mackenzie at the Compton Organ
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating 100 years of The Phantom of the Opera on screen! \n  \n \nSFW 25 thrills continue with an unmissable and awe-inspiring silent film and live music experience! \nStep into the shadows of the O2 Guildhall for The Phantom of the Opera (1925) — the legendary silent horror masterpiece that defined cinematic terror. Screened with live musical accompaniment by organist Donald Mackenzie. \nDirected by Rupert Julian and featuring the incomparable Lon Chaney in his most haunting role\, this adaptation of Gaston Leroux’s classic novel brings to life the tragic tale of a mysterious masked figure whose obsession with a young singer leads to madness\, music\, and murder beneath the chandeliers. \nDonald is one of Europe’s finest theatre organists. He has presided at the mighty Compton organ in the Odeon Luxe\, Leicester Square organ for over 30 years! He is an acclaimed concert organist too and his reputation extends to being the doyen of silent film organ accompanists. \nHe has performed in many of the UKs top venues from major Cathedrals to our great Concert Halls – all performed in his own inimitable style. Donald is in demand playing for recitals of light and popular organ classics as well as his silent film performances. \nAlong with the screening\, audiences will get the chance to experience Southampton’s magnificent dual- console Compton organ at O2 Guildhall Southampton. This rare and powerful instrument is not only a piece of musical history but also a marvel of engineering\, capable of producing a vast range of sounds that have filled the Guildhall with music for many decades. Sadly public performances with the organ are infrequent and the Southampton Film Week screening in recent years is an increasingly rare opportunity to hear\, and see it played. \nWe are grateful to The Theatre Organ Club for its support in enabling this event \n  \nTICKETS BOOKING ON O2 WEBSITE. \nPriority Tickets on sale 10:00 5th November 2025. \nGeneral Sale 10:00 7th November 2025. \n

SUMMARY:Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (Live Music & Film)
DESCRIPTION:Live music & film at Turner Sims\nCert U | 1927 | Dir. F. W. Murnau| Drama | USA | 1hrs 37 mins\n\nThis lyrical masterpiece from the director of Nosferatu\, a pinnacle of silent cinema\, is a study of betrayal\, love and reconciliation.\n  \nSunrise (1927) is a landmark film in cinematic history that won the first Academy Award for “Best Unique and Artistic Picture” and received awards for Best Cinematography at the first-ever Academy Awards ceremony. It is often considered one of the greatest films ever made\, known for its romantic drama\, emotional intensity\, and groundbreaking cinematography.   \n \n“Seduced by a vamp from the city\, an unsophisticated farmer in a country village plans to murder his wife. However\, on their journey to reach town\, the couple rediscover their love for each other in a dazzling jazz age sequence. With its dreamlike realism\, fluid camera work and simple\, intense images of unequalled beauty\, this adds up to one of the most enchanting experiences in the history of cinema.” \nThis screening features live multi-instrumental accompaniment from Stephen Horne on piano and Elizabeth-Jane Baldry on harp. \n  \nStephen has long been internationally considered one of the leading silent film accompanists. Although principally a pianist\, he often incorporates other instruments into his performances\, sometimes simultaneously. A house pianist at London’s BFI Southbank for thirty-five years\, he has played at all the major UK venues and recorded music for scores of silent films. He regularly performs internationally and his accompaniments have met with acclaim at many film festivals across Europe and North America\, as well as Asia and North Africa. Discover more about Stephen on his website – stephenhorne.co.uk \nElizabeth-Jane Baldry is an English harpist who performs internationally. Her compositions have been used by ITV\, the BBC\, and Irish\, Japanese\, Danish\, and Canadian film\, radio and television. She is the only silent movie harpist in the world performing live to cinema screenings of early film. A passionate nature-lover\, she is lucky enough to own a magical ten acre wood in the Dartmoor National Park where she grows trees\, keeps bees\, and brews tea in a twig kettle. You can read more about her on her website – elizabethjanebaldry.com \n“Murnau’s greatness lies in this realization – that it is possible to photograph the real world and yet invest it with a variety of poetic\, imaginative\, and subjective qualities.” – David Thomson \nBOOK YOUR TICKET

SUMMARY:THE MARK OF ZORRO with live musical accompaniment
DESCRIPTION:THE MARK OF ZORRO \nCert U | 1920 | Dir. Fred Niblo | Adventure/Western/Romance | USA | 80 mins \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nSilent feature screening with live musical accompaniment \nThis genre-defining swashbuckler adventure is considered to be the world’s first action adventure film and the first time the iconic masked hero was portrayed on screen. \nFred Niblo’s The Mark of Zorro (1920) not only gave birth to a genre but established a new persona for star Douglas Fairbanks. Just like Fairbank’s masked hero the film catapulted him from standard film actor to one of Hollywood’s first superstars. Elements of the film and Fairbanks’ portrayal would later inspire Bob Kane’s most famous of heroes\, Batman. \nSet in Spanish California\, Fairbanks portrays Don Diego Vega\, a comically effete young nobleman with a taste for tasselled sombreros and juvenile silk-hanky magic tricks. But when danger calls\, Diego swathes himself in black\, straps on a well-honed sword and storms the countryside as the mysterious Zorro. Slicing his initial into the faces of the “sentinels of oppression” and pausing only to boldly romance the woman (Marguerite De La Motte) to whom his shy alter-ego can hardly summon the courage to speak. \nThe Mark of Zorro is an uplifting escape adventure with the thrills which would be copied the world over throughout the rest of the history of cinema. \nThis special screening is co-produced by Turner Sims with Southampton Film Week in partnership with South West Silents. Live musical accompaniment comes from pianist Meg Morley and drummer Emiliano Caroselli. \nMeg Morely is an Australian-born\, UK-based pianist\, composer and improviser. Meg creates music within diverse artistic genres (silent film\, contemporary dance and ballet\, solo piano\, contemporary jazz ensembles and electronic music). Classically-trained from the age of two\, Meg has worked with various dance companies (English National Ballet\, Rambert Company\, Matthew Bourne\, Pina Bausch). She performs and composes for international film festivals and institutions (BFI\, Nederlands Silent Film Festival\, Kino Lorber). She recently released a second album with Meg Morley Trio (Richard Sadler on bass\, Emiliano Caroselli on drums) who have also recorded and toured her original scores for silent film. \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:SFW22: Buster Keaton's Sherlock Jr at Guildhall with Compton Pipe Organ
DESCRIPTION:Sherlock Jr. (1924) with live accompaniment from Richard Hills at the Compton pipe organ\nTuesday 15 November 2022 at 7:30pm\nDir. Buster Keaton | USA | 45m | U | Feature with live music \nA film projectionist longs to be a detective\, and puts his meagre skills to work when he is framed by a rival for stealing his girlfriend’s father’s pocketwatch.  \nWe are thrilled to announce that this event will begin with a performance by Richard Hills at the organ\, demonstrating the range and full wonder of its capability\, followed by an interval and then the film screening with accompaniment. \n \nAfter a break during lockdown and the Covid pandemic it’s a joy to welcome Silver Street Films back to SFW for our longstanding film week tradition\, a classic silent film with live accompaniment from the historic Guildhall Compton Pipe Organ. Celebrated Cinema Organist Richard Hills will be presenting live soundtrack to the Buster Keaton classic\,  1924’s Sherlock Jr. \nArguably the cleverest of Keaton’s 1920’s films\, this detective fantasy takes place inside the head of a cinema projectionist (Keaton) who – in a sequence that’s a technical marvel to this day – dreams himself into the screen only to be flummoxed by the film’s editing. This film includes many other fantastical set pieces\, including one stunt that even fractured Keaton’s neck\, the footage of which made it into the final film. Keaton suffered from blinding migraines for years afterwards and was unaware of the reason\, until a doctor diagnosed him in the 1930s. \n \nThe Guildhall Compton Pipe Organ is one of Southampton’s greatest hidden treasures.  Witness to all the artists\, bands\, performances and events which have taken place at the 02 Guildhall\, the organ pipes wait patiently and quietly above the stage for opportunities such as these when at the hands of the maestro they are brought to life.  Our organ in Southampton is wonderful and unique\, providing two beautiful walnut consoles – one classic and one theatre\, or Variety as it was originally called.  The consoles are positioned either side of the stage and like the pipes above the proscenium arch generally go unnoticed. \nThis event provides a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the wonder of the silent-age as it would have been experienced at the time Sherlock Jr. was produced\, whilst enjoying the magnificent Compton Organ and a glimpse of an often over-looked jewel in the City’s rich heritage. \nTickets cost £14.95 or £12.75 (concession) including booking fee from the O2 Guildhall. \nPlease note that seating WILL BE PROVIDED although the Guildhall booking system implies that this is a standing event! \n \n is run by film charity      Charity Number 1089882

SUMMARY:Teatime with Stan and Ollie
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy Sunday afternoon in the company of renowned British pianist John Lenehan\, as he introduces and provides live piano accompaniment to four of the best-loved silent movies. John sets the scene for each film with a host of musical styles resulting in a virtuosic tour-de-force – a fitting tribute to some of the masters of silent comedy. \nLaurel & Hardy Putting Pants on Philip (1927)\nMade in 1927\, it is their first “official” film together as a team. The plot involves Laurel as Philip; a young Scot newly arrived in the United States\, in full kilted splendour\, the resulting mishaps involving the kilt and his Uncle’s attempts to get him to the tailor for ‘proper’ trousers! \nCharlie Chaplin One AM (1916)\nA display of virtuoso comic acting by Charlie Chaplin who also directed the film. Arriving home in evening dress in the early hours\, he manages to maintain the utmost dignity despite enormous odds. \nLaurel & Hardy Big Business (1929)\nStan and Ollie are determined to sell Christmas Trees (even to the most unwilling customers!)\, it’s impossible not to laugh at their antics – selling Christmas trees in the middle of summer! \nBuster Keaton One Week (1920)\nBuster Keaton and Sybil Seely are newlyweds.  Among their wedding gifts is a portable house you can easily (apparently) put together in one week… \nTicket price includes complimentary cup of tea and slice of cake \n  \nPresented by Turner Sims in association with Southampton Film Week \n  \n is run by film charity      Charity Number 1089882 \nWe are delighted\, with support of our partners\, to present a number of events for free but if you are able to make a donation when purchasing your ticket or attending an event we will be incredibly grateful – and able to sustain City Eye and Southampton Film Week for years to come!  Thank you.

SUMMARY:Safety Last (1923)
DESCRIPTION:1923 | USA | Dirs Fred C. Newmeyer and Sam Taylor | 1:14 | Cert U  \nFeature film and live music event \nWe are delighted to welcome Silver Street Films back to SFW for what has become an annual Film Week highlight – classic silent film with a live soundtrack provided by World renowned organist Donald MacKenzie at Southampton’s unique Compton Pipe Organ. \nThis year our classic film is the action comedy Safety Last starring Harold Lloyd with Mildred Davis\, Bill Strother\, Noah Young and Westcott Clarke. \nIn 1922\, the country boy Harold says goodbye to his mother and his girlfriend Mildred in the train station and leaves Great Bend expecting to be successful in the big city. Harold promises to Mildred to get married with her as soon as he “make good”. Harold shares a room with his friend “Limpy” Bill and he finally gets a job as a salesman in the De Vore Department Store. However\, he pawns Bill’s phonograph\, buys a lavaliere and writes to Mildred telling that he is a manager of De Vore. One day\, Harold sees an old friend from Great Bend that is a policeman and when he meets his friend Bill\, he asks Bill to push the policeman over him and make him fall down. However Bill pushes the wrong policeman that chases him\, but he escapes climbing up a building. Out of the blue\, Mildred is convinced by her mother to visit Harold without previous notice and he pretends to be the manager of De Vore. When Harold overhears the general manager saying that he would give one thousand dollars to to anyone… \n“It is by general agreement the most famous shot in silent comedy: a man in a straw hat and round horn-rim glasses\, hanging from the minute hand of a clock 12 stories above the city street. Strange\, that this shot occurs in a film few people have ever seen.” \nThe Guildhall Compton Pipe Organ is one of Southampton’s greatest hidden treasures. \nThis event provides a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the wonder of the silent-age as it would have been experienced at the time Safety Last was produced\, whilst enjoying the magnificent Compton Organ and a glimpse of an often over-looked jewel in the City’s rich heritage. \n  \n is run by film charity      Charity Number 1089882 \nWe are delighted\, with support of our partners\, to present a number of events for free but if you are able to make a donation when purchasing your ticket or attending an event we will be incredibly grateful – and able to sustain City Eye and Southampton Film Week for years to come!  Thank you.

SUMMARY:Salomé (1923)
DESCRIPTION:1923 | Dir Charles Bryant | 1:14 | Cert 12A \n  \nOpulent\, extravagant and decadent – an all too rare screening of the 1923 silent film Salomé\, complete with live music composed by Charlie Barber. \nAdapted from the controversial Oscar Wilde play Salomé\, the film is set in the court of King Herod and follows the heroine’s ill-fated desire for John the Baptist. This classic film is a visual feast; furnished by lavish designs inspired by artist Aubrey Beardsley\, and an unforgettable title role performance by the flamboyant Hollywood silent film star\, Alla Nazimova. \nInspired by traditional Arabic ensembles\, Charlie Barber’s new score is equally dramatic. Performed by musicians playing from two towers flanking each side of the giant silver screen\, this is a riveting blend of music and spectacle unlike anything else. \n  \nPresented by Turner Sims in association with Southampton Film Week \n  \n\n  \n is run by film charity      Charity Number 1089882 \nWe are delighted\, with support of our partners\, to present a number of events for free but if you are able to make a donation when purchasing your ticket or attending an event we will be incredibly grateful – and able to sustain City Eye and Southampton Film Week for years to come!  Thank you.
