Final Deadline 6th October 2023.

SFW: Shorts welcomes narrative based fictional short films, of any theme, style or genre including animation, drama, horror, comedy, etc. SFW: Shorts also accepts short documentaries, artists moving image and new for this year, music videos.

All shortlisted films will be eligible for the Michael Fuller Award for Best Film selected by our panel of judges and the Audience Award voted for at the screening and awards ceremony during the festival. Filmmakers from Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Surrey, West Sussex and Isle of Wight will also be in contention for the Solent University sponsored Regional Filmmaker Award.

The Short Course is just one of the opportunities provided through the BFI to train and inspire the next generation of UK filmmakers and offers young people age 16-19 the opportunity to work alongside professionals and gain hands-on filmmaking experience to help develop practical knowledge and skills.

If you are are interested in applying for this opportunity to get ahead in the film industry, visit the BFI Academy page on the City Eye website for more information.

There are just 20 places available on the course and we are working with partners to ensure that aspiring filmmakers from across the entire Solent region have the chance to attend. We also encourage applications from people; with disabilities, who are LGBTQIA+, from lower socio-economic backgrounds, from ethnically diverse communities, or from other disadvantaged groups. The main thing is that you are passionate about film and eager to progress your filmmaking skills and experience. So get in touch - there's nothing to lose!

BFI Producer Lab
Applications close at 12 noon on Mon 14 Aug! 

The BFI Network South West Producer Lab weekender will take place on Sat 23rd and Sun 24th Sep and is open to aspiring, early-career producers based in the south west of England. The lab is aimed at those who are interested in developing their skills as short film producers and applying to future rounds of the BFI Network Short Film Fund. You might not yet identify as a producer but have relevant transferable skills (maybe experience in project/event management, fundraising, public relations, logistics, or as a personal assistant) and be looking to make the move into filmmaking.

The Lab takes place over two days of masterclasses, case studies and practical activities at Exeter Phoenix and over Zoom, covering subjects such as collaborating with writers/directors, budgeting and finance, wellbeing and resilience, and how to produce a BFI NETWORK-supported short. You will leave with a greater awareness of how to establish yourself as a producer and successfully manage a short film production.

Time is of the essence! Applications close at 12noon on Mon 14 Aug so don't delay!
