Taking its title from a Hopi word meaning ‘life out of balance,’ Godfrey Reggio’s Koyaanisqatsi – eight years in the making – displays the lack of balance between humans and our relationship with our environment. Reggio’s breath taking ‘tone poem’ marries experimental editing, lush cinematography by Ron Fricke (who would go on to make Baraka and Samsara), and Phillip Glass’ iconic score to create an audio/visual experience unlike any other. Told without interviews or narration, Reggio’s film shows our lives, our goals, our achievements, and our failures within the context of their effects on the world around us. By prioritising nature over the human understanding of it, Reggio reveals both the grandeur of the world around us, as well as the follies of our attitude towards it.
A seminal film both in art and environmental circles, Koyaanisqatsi, which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2022, is the perfect film to begin our weekend of eco-films, challenging not only the way we see film itself, but the world around us too.
