We begin Thursday’s programme of events at Southampton Film Week with University Professors and PhD Candidates discussing The Future Of Cinema a head of a full day of film screenings, talks and live music celebrating Archive and Classic Film.
The Short Story Cinema programme celebrates the short film format and what can visually & creatively be achieved in just a few minutes of storytelling.
For SFW23 we will present two evenings of wonderful short films with Short Story Cinema Programme 1 on Tuesday 14th November at Solent University and Programme 2 on Friday 17th November at God’s House Tower.
Southampton Film Week is delighted to announce the short films that have made the official selection for SFW: Shorts 2023!
We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who submitted to this year’s competition. The Southampton Film Week team have enjoyed watching films of all different forms and genres from across the globe. We have created our 15-film shortlist for the four categories of Best Fiction, Best Artist Film, Best Documentary and *NEW FOR 2023* Best Music Video. All films in the Official Selection are in contention for the Michael Fuller Award for Best Film selected by our panel of judges, and the Audience Award voted for at the screening and awards ceremony during the festival. We will also announce the winner of the Solent University sponsored Regional Filmmaker Prize and the award for Best Animation.

On Friday 10th November, the sixteenth annual Southampton Film Week held its launch night. Filmmakers, aspiring filmmakers, and those who just simply love film came together at MAST Mayflower Studios to experience the works from the array of creative talents who call Southampton – shortlisted in 2022 to become the United Kingdom’s City of Culture in 2025 – home. It is my privilege to have been given the opportunity to write this blog post about my experience at the event and I also wish to explain why events such as Southampton Film Week are vital for both the expansion of filmmaking opportunities as well as the preservation of film going forward.
